Last night I watched the E:60 special on ESPN about Brady and got a real good look at what makes the man tick. I always knew that he was a motivated individual but until last night I had a poor understanding as to why. Tom Brady grew up in California where he was a 2 sport athlete in high school. Brady made the most of his opportunity and went off to Michigan to play football for the Wolverines. When he arrived he had to compete with Brian Griese for the starting position but he was unable to definitively win the spot so Griese played while Brady sat.

In Brady’s junior year he was the starter for the Wolverines and led the team to a 10 win season and earned the respect of his coaching staff and teammates. Unfortunately for Brady he was never the prototypical build for an elite QB.

To start his senior season he had to split time with the very talented Drew Henson. Henson never controlled a game like Brady so after a few games Brady was once again the starter. Brady led the Wolverines to the Orange Bowl and finished his college carrier with a win there. From the beginning of his professional career, Brady’s confidence never wavered. He knew that if he was just given a chance then he would prove that he was better than a 6th round pick and that he was better than every other QB taken before him. Brady was so impressive in his first year that the Patriots opened up a fourth roster spot for a QB just so no one else would get him. The next year he was named the backup to Drew Bledsoe only because the Patriots felt that his lack of experience would show in the regular season if he was named the starter.

Bledsoe got hurt after the first few games so Brady was given his shot. He had prepared everyday for over a year for the day he would get his opportunity to play and he has never looked back. He won a Super Bowl in his first year as a starter. He’s won 3 in his career while going to 4 in total.

His teams have always been in contention and the only year they hadn’t made the playoffs is when he was injured for an entire season. Tom Brady’s story is spectacular and can be used to inspire future generations of great players. The biggest problem that most people have with professional athletes is their sense of entitlement.

You hear a lot of players talk about their contract disputes and shout about getting paid what they are worth. These men will sit out training camps, part of the regular season and in some cases an entire season all because of what they feel they deserve. Brady had a contract dispute with the Patriots a little while ago and he didn’t miss a single practice. He isn’t entitled to anything. He shows day in and day out that you have to work for everything you get in this world.

He embodies everything that a professional athlete should be and hopefully he will be the role model that future pros take after.
