Kawai Bl 31 Serial Number
Winki、 Probably not, except for your piano tech which ever he is a decent or a poor one says this is a special version or specially cared one. BL-31 was a very-lowend model in the years they were produced. It was listpriced only JPY250,000-350,000 and even low-income Japanese salary workers could afford without pains. If special treatments such as that hammers have been replaced with better ones and properly voiced, USD2,000 seems unreasonably high. I have a used KL502(serial# 1155547)which was listpriced JPY450,000-500,000 and produced in the same years as yours costed only USD18,000 in Japan. Re: value of kawai BL-31?

One of them liked it, but the other one didn't. I had check on the internet that for a KAWAI piano build in around 1980 would cost 2500 or even a little more. So I thought 2000 would be a fair. But I became worried about it after I read MASAKI's massage. To MASAKI: May I know what year was the KAWAI BL-31(#M1109337)made? As I knew, the owner had it from a piano dealer 8 years ago. Could that piano had been replaced to good hamer at the dealershop?
Thanks for your help! Re: value of kawai BL-31? 10/10/05 03:31 AM 10/10/05 03:31 AM Joined: Sep 2002 Posts: 374.
Winki, According to the following web page, 1109337 was built in some year(s) between 1979 and 1985. Verify this by yourself. If we try narrowing the period, I would guess 1109337 was built between 1979 and 1981. Please note that this is my humble guess based on humble info that BL-31s were built only between 1979 and 1980 according to the following japanese web page. BL-31s were built in years S48.3 - S49.8, which is Mar 1979 and Aug 1980 in your calendar.
As for hammer replacement, No one would replace hammers of low-end pianos because labor for replacing hammer heads and voicing these new hammer heads costs a lot of money compared to the original product cost. If you take a look at, from the bottom, the junctions between the hammer heads and the shanks, you may see some sort of glue.
If it is chemical, the hammer heads are glued in factory and no one has replaced. If it is hide or look-alike-hide of chemical, we may say some techs made the replacement. But, you had better consult someone else rather than me about how to identifiy whether or not he hammpers or shank-and-hammers have been replaced. Hope some professionals are watching my update and help you.
